It was on a rainy morning in Fukui that we stumbled upon Moji Cafe. We wanted to go to a place to chill while waiting for the rain to go away before we started on our itinerary proper. When searching for cafes nearby us, we came across Moji Cafe whose interiors resembled the style of Muji (incidentally the names sound alike too). It was one of the best decisions we have made to spend a quiet rainy morning there.
From the outside, Moji Cafe looked like a residential home. Its wooden panel doors opened onto a sophisticated interior and it certainly does have the Muji feels with a minimalistic setting characterised mainly by wooden furnishings.
Inside, Moji Cafe has a space that displays beautifully curated homeware with its own allure.
The cafe has a lovely ambience and it was beautifully lighted with sunshine coming in through the glass panes.
It is said that filming is not allowed inside, but the owner was okay with us discreetly taking photos using our phones. This was the spot that we have chosen to spend a rainy morning at. Loved the old school metallic chairs with plush cushioning which added a retro vintage vibe to the space.
Time seemed to flow on its own pace in Moji Cafe. As we were the only customers that day, the lady owner took her time to bring the kettle to a boil to make our coffee and leisurely poured the hot water over the ground coffee in the filter paper. She recommended that we have the banana scone which was the special for the day. It tasted like a good solid banana cake in a crumbly form. We also ordered madeleines shaped in the form of hearts. They paired beautifully with the iced coffee.
We felt that it was worthwhile to make a trip to the cafe as we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The place brings you a sense of calmness and it makes one feel like you are in a beautifully curated residential setting with its owner patiently preparing delicious bakes and coffee for her guests. She even gave us a complimentary biscotti which was deliciously crisp and filled with nuts and berries.
We spent a leisurely morning at Moji and the rains did not dampen our spirits, on the contrary we were thankful that it rained as we were blessed to have found this gem of a place. Moji Cafe is something of a hidden treasure in Fukui. The elements of being a private home and cafe open to the public, integrated into the same building makes it feel both new and traditional all at once.
When you step into Moji, the world outside ceases to exist and time stands still. Enjoy this unique coffee experience in Fukui.
