We chanced upon Chedda & Oli after checking out Under Stand Avenue (언더스탠드에비뉴) which is located near the outskirts of Seoul Forest. Like Common Ground, Under Stand Avenue is lined with shipping containers, a hipster space showcasing the immense creativity of the Seoulites. You can find local emerging artistes performing and entrepreneurs gathered selling knick knacks, fresh produce and insta-worthy grub from their food trucks.
Seoul has seen a surge in entrepreneurial spirit especially among the youths who would like to bring something new and artistic to the table, beyond what the market currently offers. Such spaces embraces local craftsmanship and the little shops and makeshift booths are filled with endless customized items. It is fun to spend some time browsing though the unique crafts and goods that transpire a certain quality way of life.
After browsing through the stalls at Understand Avenue and taking a short walk in Seoul Forest, we were super hungry and were looking for a late afternoon snack. Chedda & Oli was packed during the weekends and it was pet-friendly too. Sitting in the outdoor area of the cafe were many ladies with their dogs in prams. It was a super cute sight.
We ordered the macaroni and cheese with bacon panini and it was on point. The bread was crusty and well-toasted and who would have thought that the combination of macaroni and cheese with toast would be such a genius one. I also loved that in most Korean eateries they serve pickles on the side with their dishes. They add a nice tartness and helps to cut through any greasiness.
I've always loved this kind of illustrations of food on menus. This buzzing cafe has plenty of cafe fare on its menu - take your pick from Salmon Avocado Salad, Grilled Eggplant and Tomatoes Panini, Chilli Shrimp Sandwiches to Asparagus Bacon Sandwiches. On a side note, drinks in Seoul's cafes while aesthetically pleasing, they are usually on the pricier side.
It is the strawberry milk season and no, we are not talking about artificially flavoured strawberry milk, but the ones which are the new craze in Seoul right now. Filled with real-cut Korean strawberries and served in glass bottles, fuelled by the love for them by Korean celebrities, people are willing to pay 8000 won for a glass of it. The drink had a refreshing taste with sweet chunks of strawberry and it's not hard to see why it's trending.
The signature Jollypong Latte is a must order when you are here. I would seriously take a plane back to Seoul just to have this again. As a huge fan of the snack Jollypong (sweet grain puffs), the drink reminds me of a brown rice cereal that tasted even when better chilled. The result is a frothy malty drink with crispy Jollypong grains.
Chedda & Oil is a great pit stop after taking a stroll in the Seoul Forest or after you have checked out the Under Stand Avenue nearby. Expect wholesome and delicious food crafted with care in a cosy space. This is also an ideal place for those with pets to linger on a sunny day and unwind over brunch.
