Who can resist a good Banh Minh? At the popular breakfast place in Saigon, we were treated to Banh Minh Op La ( baguette with sunny side up eggs). I would like think of it as a deconstructed Banh Minh as you get to assemble your very own sandwich!
We were in Saigon for Christmas and this was the perfect breakfast to kickstart our festive morning! It had all the 'festive' ingredients that we were craving for. Perfectly cooked eggs, an assortment of hams and sausages, some deep fried, and with slices of fatty meats as well.
When the Banh Mi Op La arrived at our tables, we were super excited to take photos of them cos they looked so good being served on the hot metal pans, which gave a nostalgic feel to it and also kept the delicious ingredients warm.
The iced coffee reminded me of the 3 in 1 coffee mix we have back home in Singapore, but it wasn't a bad thing. It was not as strong or robust as the Vietnamese coffee we have on the streets, and I quite liked that it was milky and smooth for a morning coffee.
The baguettes served were light and airy on the inside, with a crispy and crusty exterior. We shared 2 sets amongst the 4 of us, and we didn't feel full from it. In fact, we went to have pho right after this meal!
If you order the set, it comes with pickled vegetables, and a side of pate with mayonnaise. Spreading the pate into the baguette and dipping it into the runny egg yolks adds a touch of luxuriousness to the overall taste!
Overall, the atmosphere at Banh Mi Hoa Ma is great! The tables and chairs are lined up on both sides of the alley, and the shopowners will pull out the foldable tables from the sides when new customers arrive.
It's a fun experience to devour the delicious baguette while having cars and motorcycles pass through the alley. Oh, and there's a school building right behind this alley. The children were so friendly and they would wave to the customers who are sitting in the stools having their breakfasts. As we were there during Christmas, the school was playing Christmas melodies and they added to the overall festive atmosphere heh.
For a lively and delicious breakfast experience in Saigon, you have to visit this place at least once! You can't go wrong with runny eggs and fluffy breads.
